- 4 acting scams and how to spot them
Here are some of the common and not so common things actors may be conned into doing.
- “Finks” at Ensemble Studio Theater
Joe Gilford changes the names and writes about his parents’ experience with the Blacklist in the 1950s. (Note: Darth Actor and Jack Gilford both took Stella Adler’s lecture class on early modern playwrights, and Mr. Gilford was recognized–to an extent–one little girl was very excited and said, “He’s in COMMERCIALS!” Darth Actor thought to himself, “He’s been in a lot more than commercials, sweetie.”)

stuff you should know about
- Spike Jones: “Hotcha Cornia” (NOT the movie director)
A mashup of the two Russian songs best known to American audiences: “The Song of the Volga Boatmen” and “Dark Eyes.” -
“Just as a mother always find her child handsome and wise and noble, so too an acting coach finds his or her students always in need of training or a tune-up. This begets dependence. This also secures payments. I think you need to have your training–good training–and then you need to fly away from the nest. Your instrument is only tested by working with a variety of directors and actors on a variety of texts. That’s it. The insular world of the acting class is very comforting: So is alcohol; so are drugs. I find it very solipsistic and delusional. Let the work of the real world of the theatre toughen and beat you up and refine you.” Paul Scofield/Interview with James Grissom/1992.
- Opening Scene: “The Naked Kiss”
B movies (cheaply made for the second spot in a double feature) were often sensational and dealt with social issues that big budget pictures avoided. Constance Towers, the actress here, later played opposite Yul Brynner in “The King & I” and is married to John Gavin, star of Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and former U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Director Sam Fuller became a major influence on later filmmakers long after The Naked Kiss. - Stealing a movie from Henry Fonda is no small thing
Victor Mature and Henry Fonda. The best-known film version of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral is John Ford’s My Darling Clementine.
